Since gaining independence on August 17, 1945, the number of provinces in Indonesia has continued to grow, and up to now, it has reached 38 provinces spread from Sabang to Merauke.
In 2022, there were 4 newest provinces officially established by the government, namely Central Papua, South Papua, Highland Papua, and Southwest Papua.
These four new provinces are the result of the expansion of the previous provinces in Papua, which were ratified by the DPR or the House of Representatives through Laws:
