The Importance of a Car’s Identification Number and How to Check It

The car’s identification number, also known as its chassis number, is created as a marker of authenticity for motor vehicles. Each vehicle has a different number officially assigned by the manufacturer.

Therefore, a vehicle’s chassis number, also known as the Vehicle Identification Number, contains a unique set of codes defined by the vehicle manufacturer.

What is a Car’s Identification Number?

The car’s chassis number serves as a permanent identifier for the vehicle. It can be used to track information such as the vehicle’s origin, year of manufacture, brand, model, engine size, and various other details.

You can find the identification number in several parts of your vehicle, such as the dashboard near the windshield, the side of the driver’s door, and on the engine block or transmission.

The vehicle’s chassis number is also used to access the vehicle’s history, such as service records, accident history, and to verify authenticity and ownership.

Example of a Car Identification Number

For car owners, knowing the identification number is very important. Especially when dealing with vehicle-related matters like servicing, paying taxes, and more.

Generally, a car chassis number consists of 17 alphanumeric characters that have a mix of letters and numbers, which are unique for each vehicle.

In Indonesia, chassis numbers follow the VIN format based on ISO 3779, consisting of 17 characters divided into 3 sections:

  • The first 3 digits are known as WMI or World Manufacturer Identifier

  • Digits 4 to 9 are known as VDS or Vehicle Descriptor Section

  • Digits 10 to 17 are known as the VIS or Vehicle Identifier Section

For example, MH8AA1D42JK123456, which means:

  • Characters 1-3 indicate the country of origin and manufacturer. For example, MH8 for the Suzuki vehicle made in India.

  • Characters 4-9 indicate vehicle type, engine model, body type, etc.

  • Character 10 indicates the production year, represented by a letter or number.

  • Character 11 shows the assembly plant where the vehicle was manufactured.

  • Characters 12-17 represent the serial number, unique to each vehicle.

How to Check a Car’s Identification Number Online

Besides checking offline by visiting the SAMSAT office, vehicle owners, especially those with a B license plate in the Jakarta area, can now check the chassis number online using the Cek Ranmor & Pajak DKI Jakarta app. Here’s how:

  • Download the Cek Ranmor & Pajak DKI Jakarta app from the Google Play Store.

  • Open the app and log in using your Google account or register manually.

  • Once logged in, enter the required data such as NIK and vehicle information. Make sure the NIK matches the registered vehicle owner’s data.

  • Click the Search button to start looking for the car identification number.

  • If the data is correct, detailed information about the vehicle will appear, including the chassis number, license plate number, tax details, service records, and more.

So, that’s a quick explanation about a car’s identification numbers. From their purpose to how to check them online through an app.

For car owners, this number is very important and can be used to verify the authenticity of a vehicle, especially when buying or selling a used car. Hope this information helps!
