38 Provinces in Indonesia Complete with Capitals, Uniqueness, and Traditions!

Since gaining independence on August 17, 1945, the number of provinces in Indonesia has continued to grow, and up to now, it has reached 38 provinces spread from Sabang to Merauke.

In 2022, there were 4 newest provinces officially established by the government, namely Central Papua, South Papua, Highland Papua, and Southwest Papua.

These four new provinces are the result of the expansion of the previous provinces in Papua, which were ratified by the DPR or the House of Representatives through Laws:

  • Law Number 14 of 2022, which explains the formation of South Papua Province.
  • Law Number 15 of 202,2 which explains the formation of Central Papua Province.
  • Law Number 16 of 202,2 which explains the formation of Highland Papua Province.
  • Law Number 29 of 202,2 which explains the formation of Southwest Papua Province.
